My work explores a connection between music, language, and abstract painting. I am interested in searching out an underlying association between the written word, sung word, and the painted image, believing they all share a similar point of origin. I am primarily inspired by a recent musical movement that pairs centuries-old hymn texts with contemporary folk and rock tunes, bringing the content of these texts to life in a new generational context. I love that the integrity of the lyrical structure and the theology of a hymn text remain in tact while the tone of its dissemination is altered to accommodate a newer audience. This pairing of old and new is fascinating to me. In my own work, I reference the cadence and rhythm of some of these hymn texts, most of which are drawn from a collection of over a thousand hymns called the Gadsby Hymnal. Many of these texts were never paired with music, so as I reference them in my work, my paintings become visual manifestations of theological content traditionally paired with a musical language. In my case, the lexicon has been transferred to paint and the participant shifts from hearing the content to seeing it on a surface.
